Swachh Bharat Summer Internship Programme 2018 was initiated by Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Central Government of India. The aim of this Programme is to engage the college students in “Clean India” movement and at a higher level “Nation Building”. Student volunteers have to adopt a village of their choice and work for 100 hours creating Awareness Campaign on Cleanliness, Open Defecation Free, Waste Management and Save Environment etc.,
      From our college 3 Teams of Swachh Bharat Volunteers along with the Nodal Officer Dr. S.Somasundari Latha, Assistant Professor of English camped at Pon Vilaintha Kalathur village from 28.06.2018 to 09.07.2018. The Inaugural Function was held on 28.06.18 at Pavalar Pugalenthi Govt. Higher Secondary School in the auspicious presence of our college Principal Dr. S.Chidambaram Vinayagam. He gave the Presidential Address and Dr.P.K.Killivalavan, HOD, Department of Tamil in his key note address insisted on the importance of keeping the environment clean. Dr.Rajarajan, HOD of Physics department spoke about the necessity to avoid using plastics. Trees were planted by our Swachh Bharat volunteers at the school campus. Volunteers enacted a play directed by Mrs. Mahalakshmi, Assistant Professor of English.
    Students had done door to door campaign on Open Defecation Free, Waste Management, Waste Compost Culture, thrift use of water and electricity and avoid using Plastic. Our volunteers with charts and Laptop created awareness among students about cleanliness. They cleaned the streets and created awareness among rural folk. Street play with the theme of open defecation free, waste management and protect environment was enacted by our students at various places in the villages. Mime show insisting the above themes done by the interns received applause from school students rural folk.
     Its Valedictory Ceremony was held at Pavalar Pugalenthi Govt. Higher Secondary School, Pon Vilaintha Kalathur on 09.07.18. The Programme started with Swachh Bharat Rally in which School and College students, Principal and Professors participated shouting slogans like save water, save electricity, use rest room, keep environment clean and protect nature. Later students have taken Swachh Bharat Oath not to use plastic, keep their environment pollution free and protect nature and its resources. Swachh Bharat volunteers shared their experience and the challenges they faced. With the vote of thanks by Programme officer Dr.S.Somasundari Latha, the programme came to a close.
      No doubt this internship programme was a different experience for volunteers. It created a sense of social responsibility among interns.
